You’ve heard of a personal board of directors...the people you go to when you need advice, mentoring, or another opinion.
You probably have a personal board without even realizing it. Mine is a list of friends, old college advisors, old colleagues, and my family.
But I got to thinking, if a P.B.D. guides you a certain direction…who says you need to have met them at all? Who says they even need to be alive? What if you could look to someone for advice without talking to them?
After reading a (auto)biography, you’re usually so in tune with someone's personality that you can guess what they would say or act. What if you could guess the advice they would give?
What if you went a step further and followed that advice? That sounds like a pretty good board of directors to me.
Here’s whos on my list of Historical Board of Directors and their answer to my make believe questions, “I want to take a big life risk, what do you think?”
Malcolm X - “Greg, do you believe in it? Then do it.”
With his bold and aggressive attitude, he stands up for what he believes in. I admire that he devoted himself to his cause and died doing what he loved.
Benjamin Franklin - “Greg, if you’re curious about it, then follow your passion, everything will work out as long as you keep exploring. PS. Try the crepes in France.”
BF loved to understand how things worked. Lightning, women, press, politics and war weren’t safe from his investigation. I admire his ability to look at any situation and look at it with a fresh set of eyes.
Jocko - “Greg, Think about your goal, have a back up plan, and push through with determination.”
The most hardcore military guy I’ve seen. I like his style and his flagship book title, “Extreme Ownership.” I seek to match his ruthless loyalty to his country and brothers.
Tim Ferriss - “Greg, have you talked to people who’ve made this decision before? What is the opportunity cost? Where else can you put your energy? If all signs point towards yes, then do it.”
I like Tim, I’ll meet him one day, not yet, but one day. I take his quarks, life hacks, and ability to keep pushing towards his goals. I have extreme respect for his self discipline.
Who’s on your personal/historical board of directors?
